What elements go into building a website?
In order to determine how much you will need to pay to develop your site, it is important to understand the key elements that go into building it. These include:
-
Design - The design of a site is created by the designer/programmer, but photographic images usually need to be purchased from a professional photographer. This can add to your overall cost but will improve the professional look and feel of the site.
-
Content - The customer normally writes the text portion of a website with input from the website creator. Writing for the web is different than writing for print. The writer needs to limit the amount of text on his or her pages (unless necessary for a technical explanation) and avoid obvious marketing language (e.g. - "the best..." "the greatest..." ). Adding text to a page is not a major cost factor but adding pages will increase the complexity of a site.
-
Navigation - Navigation is the way you link to content on your site and its structure must be logical and user-friendly. At minimum you will want a home page with links to a page with contact information. As a general rule, important information should not be more than 2 clicks from the home page.
-
Hosting and Domains - Every website owner needs to puchase a domain name, e.g. www.yoursitename.com, and needs to purchase hosting on an outside server. (unless you already have one). Generally a domain name can be purchased for less than $15.00 per year and a simple hosting package can be purchased for under $50.00 per year. The more complex the site the higher the fee. GoDaddy.com is the hosting server Wizard Web of NJ normally uses.
-
Web Tools and Applications - These vary considerably and can add cost and development time but add considerable value. Examples of applications include a shopping cart, a message board, and a content management system which would allow the customer to update the website without having to contact the web designer/programmer.
- Website Marketing - Search engine maketing is important because you want users to find your site when using a search engine like Google. The web designer/programmer will work with you to include "key words" and make other modifications to the site to increase visibility. In addition, there are multiple ways to advertise your site, but like standard advertising, fees are involved.
